Ward 7 DME Community Engagement Effort

Advisory Neighborhood Commission 7A is joining the DC Schools Quality Education Community Engagement effort by leading a Community Conversation in order to address ways to improve quality and access to education for DC's Ward 7 school students. The Ward 7 Community Conversation will take place Saturday August 11, 2012 at Kelly Miller Middle School, 301 49TH ST NE, Washington, DC 20019 from 10am-2pm. Lunch and childcare will be provided. After the Conversation, ANC 7A will be giving away free school supplies and backpacks to the first 25 ward 7 residents and the first 25 7A residents. *One per parent. To carry out this initiative, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education is partnering with Public Agenda, a national non-profit, non-partisan, research and public engagement organization.

7a Cleans

Commissioner Thompson 7A02 will spearhead the 7A Cleans beautification project targeting several Single Member Districts. This initiative is designed to encourage constituents to participate in the beautification of target areas through partnerships with Greater DC Cares, Department of Public Works, 7A etc.

7A Reads

Treasurer Martha Kent 7A05 and Villareal Johnson 7A07 will co-chair 7A Reads, a reading program designed to encourage Kimball, Davis, Plummer and Sousa students from grades K-8 to read with their families. The program will be held three times a week for the summer months at the Dorothy Irene Height Public library on Benning Road. Volunteers are needed to read to students along with their parents.

7A Health and Fitness Bootcamp

Commissioner Nicole Hamlett 7A03 will coordinate the 7A Health and Fitness Bootcamp. The Bootcamp is designed to address the high rates of obesity and heart disease in Ward 7. The 15 sessions will be held at the DC Parks and Recreation Therapeutic Center (3030 G Street, NW) and will feature aerobic classes, nutrition workshops and individual weight/body fat analysis. Participants are asked to “weigh in” on the first and last day of the program. The Participant who loses the most weight and/ or body fat will be eligible to win a $50 gift certificate from a local DC store.

7A Back to School

Secretary Latese Gilbert 7A04 and Treasurer Martha Kent 7A05 will co-chair the 7A Back to School Readiness initiative to donate book bags full of school supplies to a number of students within its boundaries. More information about the details of this project will be shared at the June 2012 Meeting.
